Russian largest fertilizer producer plans to expand exports to Africa
The announcement was made by the company’s CEO, Dmitry Konyaev, during the ‘Business Dialogue Russia-Africa’ panel at the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) held on Thursday.
Konyaev explained that Uralchem intends to scale up exports from 1 million metric tons by the end of 2024 to five times that amount by the decade’s end, calling it a milestone that would mark “real results and real achievements” for the company and African agriculture. He highlighted that by late 2024, Africa’s total fertilizer imports had reached only 10 million tons—a figure he believes is far below what is needed for the continent’s agricultural demands.
He attributed the continent’s limited fertilizer usage to systemic hurdles, such as inadequate transport systems and complex payment processes. “Often, an African farmer pays more than a European [farmer] for the same fertilizers. It’s absolutely absurd,” Konyaev stated.
To overcome these difficulties, Uralchem plans to establish joint ventures with African governments to build localized distribution networks. The company has already initiated operations in South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire.
Mikhail Rybnikov, head of PhosAgro—another major Russian fertilizer exporter—also spoke at the forum. He identified key markets for the company’s products, including South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Morocco.
“Our company makes an important contribution to strengthening food security and food sovereignty in African countries,” Rybnikov said.
