Paul Biya Secures Another Term Amid Opposition Protests
The Constitutional Council declared on Monday that Biya received 53.66% of the votes in the October 12 election, while his primary contender, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, garnered 35.19%
.
Two days after the polls closed, Tchiroma proclaimed himself the winner, referencing internal counts that he claimed placed him ahead of Biya.
The leader of the opposition Front for the National Salvation of Cameroon – who previously held the position of transport and communication minister – stepped down from the government in June to run against the long-serving president.
Tensions erupted in the coastal city of Douala on Sunday when opposition supporters ignored protest prohibitions and clashed with security forces, resulting in at least four deaths.
Demonstrators accused authorities of manipulating the vote ahead of the official results announcement.
The disturbances persisted on Monday. Tchiroma reported that two individuals were killed after snipers fired on a crowd outside his residence in the northern city of Garoua.
Additionally, a local reporter told a news agency that “a number of people” were shot dead near the opposition leader’s home.
